Hypertension is the leading cause of stroke and cardiovascular disease. In the traditional medical field, blood pressure lowering methods include medication, diet, exercise, etc. Recently, an experiment showed that blue light may improve hypertension.
A research team at the University of Surrey in the UK conducted a blue light test on 14 healthy male volunteers. On the first day of the experiment, the volunteers received 30 minutes illumination of visible blue light at 450 nm. As a contrast, they were also illuminated by artificial light without blue-spectrum for 30 minutes in the second day.
The scientists collected, analyzed, and compared data on blood pressure, arterial stiffness, vasodilation, and plasma nitric oxide levels of volunteers. Finally, it was concluded that the systolic blood pressure of the volunteers on the first day of blue light decreased by 8 mmHg on average, while the non-blue-spectrum light had no effect on blood pressure. The researchers say the effect of blue light is similar to that of antihypertensive drugs. In addition, researchers found that blue light promotes the release of nitric oxide from the skin and allow it to enter the bloodstream, reducing blood vessel stiffness, increasing blood flow and lowering blood pressure.
The Professor Christian Heiss of Surrey University said that blue light therapy is a new treatment that deserves research and development. And with the help of LED technology, precise control of the blue spectrum can be achieved. This method is especially helpful for people such as the elderly who do not easily control their blood pressure.
